New cellulose based advanced packaging materials and their design for adapted end-of-life
Duration: 3 h
Location: WUR, building tbd
0.1 ECTs
Cellulose Valley is an excellence industrial chair based in Grenoble, France, since 2021 and dedicated to developing high-performance materials derived from cellulose for packaging. This ecosystem focuses particularly on replacing fossil-based plastics with renewable and recyclable cellulose-based solutions.
A major research area concerns the development of advanced cellulose-based packaging with improved functional properties. This includes coatings and multilayer structures designed to provide barriers against oxygen, water vapour, grease and other liquids. Researchers also investigate the use of nanocellulose and bio-based polymer treatments to improve final packaging performance. New research on cellulose foam or 3D shape cellulose material propose alternative for novel lightweight packaging product. The life cycle assessment and the end-of-life of packaging is also considered by the scientist of the chair from the early stages of material design. The compatibility of coatings, additives and multilayer structures with recycling streams is carefully evaluated. Some research project focuses on recyclability in conventional paper and board recycling processes by proposing alternative multilayer design in 2D and 3D shape. Overall, Cellulose Valley aims to develop efficient cellulose-based packaging that combines performance, sustainability and circular end-of-life solutions.

Safety & Regulatory Workshop
Navigating Market and Regulatory Requirements for Biobased Materials and Products of Advanced Manufacturing in the Food Sector
Duration: 3 h
Location: WUR, building tbd
0.1 ECTs
Workshop Overview:
This three-hour workshop will provide participants with up-to-date information about the safety and regulatory requirements for novel biobased materials, including cellulose nanomaterials, lignins, and chitosans, as well as products of advanced manufacturing, including cultivated meat, alternative proteins, small molecules and other novel food ingredients. We will discuss the state of knowledge and practical considerations for meeting regulatory and customer requirements. The course will present current and emerging policies for these novel substances in key markets around the globe. The workshop will be hosted by the leaders of Vireo Advisors, an international advising firm, who have been providing leadership on successful safety demonstration strategies for novel food, cosmetic, and packaging applications.
