Francesco D'Acierno

Biography

Francesco D’Acierno completed his PhD in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (Canada) under the supervision of Carl Michal and Mark MacLachlan.

After his doctorate, Francesco joined the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (France), working in Isabelle Capron’s team and leading a project on bio-based emulsions. He subsequently took up a UKRI Postdoctoral Fellowship in Magda Titirici’s group at Imperial College London (United Kingdom), where he investigated the pressure carbonization of plastic waste for use in alkali-ion batteries.

In 2025, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at KU Leuven. His main research interests are the upcycling of waste into functional materials and the characterization of bio-based nanomaterials.
