Biography

Mika Sipponen is a Wallenberg Academy Fellow and Associate Professor of Materials Chemistry at Stockholm University. He received both his MSc (2010) and DSc (2015) degrees in Chemical Technology from Aalto University, Finland. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted research at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland before joining the group of Prof. Monika Österberg at Aalto University as a postdoctoral researcher, including a research stay with Prof. Claudia Crestini. Since establishing his independent research program at Stockholm University in 2019, Dr. Sipponen has built an internationally recognized profile in lignin valorization. He leads the Sustainable Materials Chemistry (SUSMATCHEM) group, driven by the ambition to accelerate the transition toward a circular bioeconomy through green chemistry and renewable carbon technologies, with particular emphasis on unlocking the potential of industrial lignins as feedstocks for high-performance materials. Examples of this work include innovative and scalable routes for converting renewable resources into advanced carbon materials, adhesives, and functional polymers. The group collaborates broadly with academic and industrial partners across Europe and beyond. Alongside his research activities, Dr. Sipponen teaches green chemistry, renewable materials, and advanced materials chemistry at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, and actively contributes to the training of the next generation of scientists. He has supervised three doctoral students to completion, while several former group members have gone on to successful academic careers, including tenure-track faculty positions. Through his teaching and mentorship, he seeks to connect fundamental science with real-world sustainability challenges and foster interdisciplinary thinking. Dr. Sipponen is also a co-founder of LignoFlow Technologies, a Stockholm University spin-off company dedicated to commercializing scalable technologies for lignin processing and accelerating the industrial uptake of renewable materials.
